A focus on messages and their meanings unites the many disciplines of the Communication Arts department. Communication Studies investigates verbal and nonverbal messages to help students improve their abilities. Public Relations, Journalism and Advertising develop the professional communication skills needed to succeed in the business and nonprofit worlds. Art, Cinema and Theatre develop student understanding of and capacity for creative visual communication. Digital Media Studies prepare students for careers in broadcasting and media content creation.

A focus on messages and their meanings unites the diverse disciplines within the Communication Arts department, offering students a well-rounded education in both theory and practice.

  • Communication Studies: This major examines verbal and nonverbal messages to help students enhance their interpersonal, group, and public communication skills. Courses cover topics such as rhetoric, persuasion, conflict resolution, and intercultural communication, preparing students for careers in teaching, consulting, and other communication-intensive fields.

  • Public Relations, Journalism, and Advertising: These interconnected fields provide students with the tools to craft compelling messages, build relationships, and effectively reach audiences. Public Relations focuses on strategic communication and reputation management, Journalism emphasizes storytelling and reporting across platforms, and Advertising fosters creativity and strategy to deliver impactful campaigns. Together, they prepare students for professional roles in business, media, and nonprofit organizations.

  • Art, Cinema, and Theatre: These creative disciplines emphasize the power of visual and performative storytelling. Art explores traditional and digital media, fostering creativity and design expertise. Cinema delves into film theory, production, and editing, equipping students to create impactful visual narratives. Theatre hones acting, directing, and stagecraft skills, allowing students to bring stories to life in live performance settings.

  • Digital Media Studies: This major prepares students for dynamic careers in broadcasting, digital content creation, and media production. Courses cover video production, audio editing, graphic design, and emerging technologies, giving students hands-on experience in producing and managing digital content for various platforms.

Each program in the department equips students with a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, empowering them to communicate effectively and make a meaningful impact in their chosen careers.
